Newcastle should hijack Everton’s interest in Porto playmaker Yacine Brahimi, who should be viewed as a cheaper alternative to Miguel Almiron as Rafa Benitez looks to strengthen his squad this month.
What’s the word, then?
According to The Mirror, the Toffees have been scouting the Algerian international who scored twice in Porto’s 3-1 win over Nacional on Monday night, and have been alerted to the possibility of signing the 28-year-old on the cheap as a result of his contract situation.
Brahimi is looking unlikely to renew his deal with the Portuguese giants, so Porto will need to move him on this month if they are to get a fee for one of their biggest assets.
The former Rennes star has been in great form this season, scoring seven goals and recording two assists in all competitions this season, and will quite rightly have a whole host of clubs after his signature, but the Magpies should go all out for him instead of Almiron.
Why Brahimi over Almiron?
The Chronicle reports that 24-year-old Almiron, who Newcastle allegedly make progress on for a £20m move earlier in the window, has placed the transfer in doubt as a result of his ‘astronomical’ wage demands in the region of £100k-a-week.
The Atlanta and Paraguay star would come with a huge financial package, one that Mike Ashley is unlikely to bankroll at St James Park, so perhaps he would be more interested in a cut-price move for a player who is proven in Europe such as Brahimi – something that Almiron is not, despite his enhancing reputation.

A deal to bring the Algerian to Tyneside would improve the mood around the place significantly, and could represent as upturn in the Magpies’ fortunes for the second half of the season – Brahimi’s immense talents would also be a huge weapon in their battle for Premier League survival.
