According to reports in the Daily Mail, Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to sell Lucas Moura and Angel Di Maria during the January transfer window as they are expecting to be told that they need to raise £70m to meet Financial Fair Play requirements.
PSG brought in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe from Barcelona and Monaco respectively during the summer for a potential combined fee of £363m, according to the Daily Mail, and now they need to bring some funds in.
Those two additions have helped to push Moura down the pecking order at the Parc des Princes and even though he has been generally impressive since moving to the French capital from Sao Paulo in 2013, he has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season.
Meanwhile, Tottenham lie in third position in the Premier League and have already qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League with two games to spare despite having the holders Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in their group, and they look set for another successful campaign.
While Spurs don’t often do business in the New Year, that could change if they want to boost their squad to compete in both competitions this term and Moura could be a particularly interesting potential signing.
Here are three reasons Tottenham should move for the unwanted PSG star…
Competition for Eriksen/Son
If Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino decides to go with a 4-2-3-1 formation there is no doubt that the likes of Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min need more competition in those wide attacking midfield roles – Erik Lamela has been out for so long while Georges-Kevin Nkoudou has flattered to deceive – and Moura would provide that.
The 25-year-old is capable of playing on either side and even if Spurs used the 3-4-2-1 system that has been preferred in recent times, the Brazilian has the ability to be effective in one of the spots behind Harry Kane.
Statistics
While Moura has been restricted to just five brief Ligue 1 appearances for PSG this season – with a total of 71 minutes on the pitch – the 25-year-old has scored one goal and provided a further assist, which is pretty impressive really.
He can certainly count himself unlucky that he has been almost completely frozen out by manager Unai Emery considering some of the performances he produced for the French giants last term, too.
The Brazil international scored 19 goals and registered 11 assists in 53 outings in all competitions, and he has netted 46 times and provided a further 48 assists in 228 games for the club in total.
Those are stats that should certainly catch the eye of Tottenham if Pochettino is looking to improve his attacking options in the New Year.
Pace
The 25-year-old is renowned for his pace and dribbling ability and in that respect he would give Tottenham something of a different attacking option considering Kane, Eriksen and Dele Alli aren’t exactly blessed with speed.
According to Squawka, Moura has successfully completed all four of the take-ons he has attempted in those five Ligue 1 appearances this season, while he pulled off 70 of his 115 attempts last term.
That pace and ability to beat players would make him a tough opponent for opposition defenders in the Premier League and Champions League, and signing him could undoubtedly boost Spurs’ chances of winning each competition.
